A Proposal to Reverse Obesity Rates :: Obesity in America

Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active. Studies have linked obesity to many things from ear infections, to pollution, to air-conditioning, to socializing with obese people. The reason Americans are obese is because of the increasing luxury available to them. Obesity is a rising problem in the United States, and with all the privileges given to its citizens, the country has become increasingly lazy. With portion sizes rising and physical activity decreasing, it is easy to see how obesity rates have skyrocketed. Obesity is a huge problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people, unlike most issues. People of every gender, every age, and every race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled within the last twenty years. Something must be done not only to prevent obesity rates continuous rising, but also to dramatically increase the percentage of obese people in America altogether. The best way to begin a revolution in health in America is to start with the youth. The United States has the largest percentile of overweight children in the world. Approximately one-quarter of all four to five year olds and one-third of ten to eleven year olds are considered overweight. The obese children will more than likely become overweight parents. A child with an obese parent is ten percent more likely to raise obese children and thus the cycle continues (McBride, 2010). The more years that go on the higher the obesity rate climbs because the children are eating more and more and becoming less and less active. Many would argue that children should not focus on their weight because children should lead a youth with little worries, yet obesity affects a child much more than people with that argument think. Being overweight can cause increased risks for several serious diseases and even can result in decreased mental health on account of low self-esteem and social discrimination. Children who are overweight also are at least twice as likely to have heart disease, diabetes, and orthopedic problems (Internicola, 2009). Sadly, children are being pressured into unhealthy lifestyles even more so than adults are.

One Hundred Years of Solitude :: English Literature Essays

One Hundred Years of Solitude One Hundred Years of Solitude narrates the inseparability of the past, present and future in the imaginary town of Macondo, Columbia and the folks who established it, the Buendias. Macondo used to be secluded from the outside world but during a time-span of one hundred years that was joined by births, deaths, marriages and love affairs, the town began to develop its culture and views about life that directed the Buendias in creating ghosts that haunted them as the novel draws its conclusion. Marquez’s style in creating a fictional rural town of Macondo as the setting of the novel is perfect; as a reader, I believe that Marquez used this town to tell the readers that the novel will be about the movement between past, present and future. In the beginning of the story, it is stated that Macondo is isolated but as time passed by, industrializations, revolutions and wars reached the town that led to its destruction that made the town isolated again just like what it was a hundred y ears ago. Marquez did not focus to an individual but he used the Buendia family to become the protagonists of the story. If you’re going to look closely, you will realize that the outside forces are not the antagonists but it’s the past which ended the story. The novel was written in an omniscient third person point of view, which allows the readers to know every feeling and thought that each Buendia has. The theme of the novel is about the reality that can be felt by different people with unique backgrounds not by the way a single person observes it; a reality that conveys the incorporation of the superstition to the real world and Marquez also wants to emphasize that time can be cyclic, it can repeat itself. Marquez used a lot of literary devices such as symbolisms, motifs and foreshadowing. The author used the railroad to symbolize the arrival of the modern world in Macondo. One can say that the names of the members of the Buendias want to signify something. In the span of six generations, the men of the family are named Jose Arcadio or Aureliano that suggests that you can’t simply tell their differences because Marquez wants to tell us that these people are all the same in the sense that they keep on repeating the same mistakes that was done by their ancestors.

A Reflective Report on Interpersonal Management Essay

The purposes of this essay is to analyse the improtances of Interpersonal management skills for successful management, and to reflect on a verbal interpersonal cultural based difference people have personally experienced and how develop the cross cultural awareness for more effective management. Interpersonal management skills for successful management In the last decade, with the fast development of the business in the world, the interpersonal management skills have become important increasingly both for person and organisations. The definition of interpersonal management skills is the feeling and behavior that exist within all of people and influence prople’s interaction with others (John, 2002). For everyone, a good interpersonal management skills is very important whether managers, coworkers, clients or families. Therefore, interpersonal management skills are also essential for the successful management. In the following, this part of essay will analyse the importances of interpersonal management skills for successful management and consider how to develop self-management skills. The importances of interpersonal management skills are mainly contain three aspects for successful management. First of all, good interpersonal management skills will decrease the workplace conflict (Pedler et al, 2013). According to survey, true interpersonal management skills will improve  positive communications, reduce stress situation and promote workplace understanding in management (Pedler et al, 2013). In a organisation, it always has many kinds of conflict between employees and employees, employees and imployers. If without these skills, relations inside an organisation become hostile, leading to the low efficiency of work. Therefore, true interpersonal management skills are necessary for a good management skills. In addition, better interpersonal management skills can promote the team work in a business (Cottrell, 2003). In the organisations, team work is neccesary and always happens. While during the team work, good communication will influence its efficiency. However, better interpersonal management skills will achieve the good communication, because those skills can buffer conflicts to achieve efficiency communication (Cottrell, 2003), thereby achieving the successful management. Finally, strong interpersonal management skills can make people get more advancement opportunities in the business (Mitchell, 2013). strong interpersonal management skills make people communicate employees, coworkers and upper management better, leading to people to work eficiency and help them to get success at work through the relationships (Mitchell, 2013). Through these skills, people can get better communications and relationships with boss, upper management and coworkers, thereby achieving the advancement opportunities. Thus, these skills are important for the successful management. Because of the importances of the interpersonal management skills for successful management, the methods about how to develop self-management skills are becaome very important. Firstly, the occasional conflicts are inevitable at work, thus people should know how to manage conflicts calmly and considerately (Johnson, 2014). This is a valuable interpersonal management skills and self-management skills to show the tolerance and prove handy on the job. Secondly, a positive attitude will be the true self-management skills, because the active displays of enthusiasm, can-do spirit and optimistic attitude can make people a delight for everyone at work to be around (Johnson, 2014). finally, the efficiency communications are also very important for self-management skills, because it can make people understand each other better, and then cooperate better (Johnson, 2014). In conclusion, the interpersonal management skills are important for successful management because of their useful functions and benifits. Therefore, developing the self-management skills also should be paid more attention. Verbal interpersonal cultural & Cross cultural awareness In modern society, interpersonal communications refer to communication betwee two or more people. Meanwhile the verbal interpersonal communication is one of the major element for interpersonal communication, such as sounds and word choice, and it is the oral, spoken and unwritten way of the communication (Beebe, 2002). During the process of communication, most people will meet the situattion about the cross-cultural. cross-cultural can be defined as the interaction and comparison of different cultures (Beebe, 2002). Therefore, the verbal interpersonal communication and cross cultural awareness will be useful. In the following, I will reflect on the verbal interpersonal cultural based my experience and analyse how to develop cross cultural awareness. Due to the cultural differences, some people who come from different counties will often have some misunderstanding in the team work or cooperation. I also meet this kind of problems in the presentation’s teamwork. In the process of cooperation, we have a lots of verbal communication, while some questions have different means for us. For example, â€Å"where are you going?† and â€Å"do you eat dinner?†, all of these questions are just greetings, but for my team members, these questions are their privacy. Thus, these communication and cultural barriers always happen in this process because of the different culture. communication and cultural barriers can be defined â€Å"when a person of one culture encounters the beliefs and resulting actions of another culture, there may be a clash.† (Vulcan, 2014). After that, I check and learn the countries’ custom and habits of my team members on the Internet to make me avoid these awkward situations. Because of the importance of cross cultural awareness, people should know how  to develop it. First of all, we should communicate with other countries’ people frequently such as Facebook, Twitter, E-mail (Botha et al, 2009). In my expirience, I also made some different countries’ friends in Facebook to increase my cross cultural awareness. I often contact with them, and understading each of our culture and custom. Therefore, in my opinion, I increased much expirience of cross-cultural communication and scope of knowledge recently. Thus, this is a useful method for developing cross cultural awareness. Secondly, in the process of learning, we should cooperate with people who come from different cultural and countries’, such as doing the presentation together and discuss projects together (Botha et al, 2009). I also often cooperate with different cultural and countries’ students. During cooperating, I learn a lot of cross-cultural and their habits, my cross cultural awareness was developing gradually. Therefore, all of these behaviour will help us to develop the cross cultural awareness effectively for more effective management. To sum up, because of the importance of verbal communication and cross-cultural awareness, people should know and understand more knowledge on these. Because they will help people to communicate and cooperate with different cultural and countries’ people better. Business Case for Recreation and Wellness Intranet Project Essay

1.0 Introduction/ BackgroundManage Your Health, Inc. (MYH) is an international company that provides a variety of health care services across the globe. MYH has more than 20,000 full-time employees and more than 5,000 part-time employees. MYH recently updated its strategic plan, and key goals include reducing internal costs, increasing cross-selling of products, and exploiting new Web-based technologies to help employees, customers, and suppliers work together to improve the development and delivery of its health care products and services.| 2.0 Business ObjectiveThe Recreation and Wellness Intranet Project provide an application on the current intranet to help employees improve their health. This application will allow employees to access various wellness programs through an internal intranet site. 3.0 Current Situation and Problem/Opportunity StatementCurrently MYH pays 20 percent more than the industry average for employee health care premiums, primarily due to the poor health of its employees. Adding this application to the current intranet will allow employees to register for company-sponsored classes and programs to help them manage their weight, reduce stress, stop smoking, and manage other health-related issues The project will not only include information about healthier lifestyles, but it will also include classes that our employees can join to take care of such issues as smoking cessation, weight loss and stress management. We can also offer incentives for employees that join and achieve their goals, such as successful weight loss. 4.0 Critical Assumption and ConstraintsRecreation and Wellness Intranet Project must demonstrate its value to MYH as a new Web-based technology. The project team should be able to use existing hardware and software to. The new application must be easily accessible by employees and be secured.MYH must get behind the project, and make it as visible as possible.| 5.0 Analysis of Option and RecommendationThere are three options for addressing this opportunity: 1. Do nothing. We can continue to pay the increased health care costs. 2. Farm out the service to another company. This way our employees can partake of the needed services without having to build and support these services in-house. 3. Build the Recreation and Wellness Intranet Project and run it in-house. We feel that the third option is the best one. This will have lower the costs and allow us better control the project. 6.0 Preliminary Project Requirements The main features of the Recreation and Wellness Intranet Project will be to inform employees about health issues and allow them to: 1. Register for company-sponsored recreational programs 2. Register for company-sponsored classes and programs to include weight loss, stress reduction, smoking cessation and other health related issues. 3. Track data on employee participation. 4. Offer incentives for employees to join programs and do well. 5. Other features as they are suggested by our employees and health insurance providers, if they add value to our business. 7.0 Budget Estimate and Financial AnalysisA preliminary estimate of the cost for the entire project is $200,000. This includes the hire of a temporary project manager, and the hours used by current employees to work on the project. Project savings comes in the form of reduced health insurance cost due to a healthier workforce that makes fewer claims. 8.0 Schedule EstimateThe sponsor feels that the project can be completed in 6 months, but there is some room to go over without adverse effects. The system should have an indefinite lifespan, as the increased participation by employees will keep our health insurance cost down.9.0 Potential RisksThere are a few risks involved with the Recreation and Wellness Intranet Project. The main risk is in our employees not participating in the various services offered. Therefore, employee input is necessary to make sure that those services offered are those that employees are interested in. We must also make sure that the various managers allow the employees to partake in the services. The secondary risk is that of the technical type. We must make sure that we use technologies that are currently employed by our current Intranet and HR departments. This will insure smooth integration with our current assets, and decrease the possibility of non-compatibility.

Collaboration in Elementary Education Research Paper

Collaboration in Elementary Education - Research Paper Example For collaboration to be successful, it is important for the parties involved to have the same goals and objectives. They should work together in a group to achieve their desired goals and objectives in education. The involved parties should have diverse skills and knowledge so that they can each assist one another where they are weak. However, if the parties involved collaborate for the sake of it with no motivating force, then it is destined to fail. For instance, if teachers force their students to form groups and hold group discussions without their will, then such collaborations are bound to fail. Unlike collaboration, co-teaching and consultation allows two or more teachers to work together in the same classroom to help solve problems in a classroom setting. It is an effective strategy to enable the teachers to teach students with diverse needs (Reynolds & Fletcher-Janzen, 2007). My experience in consultation or co-teaching occurred when more than one teacher attended a classroom to teach. Since each of these teachers had their differing skills and knowledge, they were able to help students with differing educational

Chemical Engineering Dissertaion. Designing a venturi scrubber Essay

Chemical Engineering Dissertaion. Designing a venturi scrubber - Essay Example This happens in the bottleneck of the venturi. Behind this bottleneck, the pressure drops, reducing flow velocity back to normal. At this point, contaminant particles are collected and removed. A venture scrubber is the simplest but most compact but efficient wet dust collector. It collection efficiency is rated from 0.2 Â µ particles when high linear gas velocities ranging 50 to 150m/s reach the throat as the gas is contacted with water. Therefore, collection efficiency of a venture scrubber depends on the pressure drop experienced during the operation. The scrubber is made of a long tube with consecutive converging and diverging sections with steep rising velocity in the convergent section. This enables the scrubbing liquor to get in contact with the throat and convert the kinetic energy into pressure in the downstream divergent diffuser. When gas flow is a variable, it is necessary to adapt the cross-section of the throat to maintain constant velocity as well as collection efficiency. In a simple tubular design, the throat is made of rubber and pinched pneumatically. Other types consider mechanical control to adapt the cross-sectional area. Amount of water injected is also varied. As water moves in the closed circuit, a settling basin is incorporated that separates the collected dust as slurry. The high velocity of the gas makes it important to consider erosion and abrasion factors as well as corrosion due to the absorption of acid gas compounds. Water treatment of the collected water pose considerable costs to venture dust collectors. The water droplets coalesce to a size of 0.1mm and are separated by centrifugal forces (conventional cyclones), lamellae separator, sick-sack flow, inertial forces and wetted collecting surfaces, or wire or fibre gauge packages. The droplets from venturi scrubbers require entrainment. Therefore droplet separators are required. A two step arrangement is preferred with a first contact using recycled water while the

Country eassy 5 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Country eassy 5 - Essay Example Some of the main wood products that the country exports to other parts of the world include plywood, veneer, wooden floors, and lumber core plywood (Liu). Deforestation is not a major issue for the government of Taiwan. The annual rate of forest loss in the country is nearly 3 to 5 percent which is recovered using plantation of more plants and trees. The major causes of deforestation in Taiwan are large-scale industrial development, logging, and increased rate of population growth. The government of Taiwan takes huge interest in preserving its asset of natural forests. The Forestry Bureau under the Council of Agriculture (COA) is laying the role of a guardian for the country’s one of the most valuable natural resources. It is not only working to increase forest productivity and improve forest health but also it is playing its role in making people aware of the need to protect the forestland of the country (Forestry Bureau).
